[ST] Nail-in-Tire: repair or replace?

OK, slap me if this is a stupid question, but should one repair or replace a
tire with a nail puncture? (Uh, that is, a large framing nail puncture...)
If I need to replace it, what might be a good replacement for the rear
BT57 -- with "good" meaning a tire that lasts a reasonable amount of
mileage, and isn't squirmy on wet roads?
