[ST] John's steering

John, I don't know if you have GenMars or not but I had a similar issue
with Merlin about a year ago.
I finally found that the small set screw had loosened on the side of the
GenMars. When I pulled up and down on the end of the grip I could see a
small amount of movement.
While I didn't even initially see the need for the screw I removed it,
applied LocTite, and reinstalled. the popping was gone never to return.
