I believe your first assumption is correct and the
variance is do to rounding is my best guess.  As for
the newer model vs. older I bought may early last year
and I believe I can set it up on two bikes if I wanted
(haven't user my bc800 lately as I bought a new bike
and haven't moved it over) but u only have the other
hardware (sensor and wiring) for one bike so u'd have
to buy two units basically.

Good luck....most of those links have decent pics and
writeups on how those user did the calculations and
setup on their bike.
