I changed to a 17t sprocket on my '00 ST last summer and haven't
looked back since. I have taken a couple 1200 mile roundtrips in that
time and can still get HIGH 40's(48 or 49) for my MPG when running 75-80
constantly between tanks. The hightest I got once was 52MPG on a run to
MI once. Just running around town or to and from work I reguarly get
46MPG, so it's still around 200 miles before a fill up, YMMV.
As for the *GRIN* factor there is no comparison between then and now,
even with 17000 miles since the change. I looked into both the 17t and
18t for mine, and decided that a total of ~500rpm difference between 19
and 17 was small enough that I wouldn't worry about anything else.
To each his/her own though it comes down to you in the end.

John,
Here's the quick math
43/19=2.26
43/17=2.53
2.53-2.26=.27
The way I figure it is a little under a 10% change (.27 delta from the
2.26 ratio baseline) so do you want that much change? It seems like a
pretty healthy bump to me. You also need to consider what it will do to
your cruising speed RPM (your RPMs will raise by the same %). To put it
into perspective you'd need to go up 5 teeth on the rear to a 48/19 to
achieve the same ratio change by altering the rear sprocket. This is not
exactly a subtle change. I've never played with the ST's gearing but I
have done it with other bikes but never this much.
....
