[Re: Mobil Technical Questions]

The following is an e-mail "conversation" I had with Mobil. This may
not be new ground, but I have conflicting info in my manual and the
advice on TriumphNet differs some as well. My additional comments are
in brackets. The Triumph oil is probably GREAT oil. I wish I could
have run dinosaur squeezings to about 5000 miles before I switched to
synthetic. Until the warranty is up, I'll run the Triunph oil and then
switch to MX4T. $17/oil change is not too bad to protect my warranty.
Anybody try K&N oil filters? What do they cost?

oil from Triumph. "No problem", I thought, until I saw the price. They
want $45/gallon! That's almost $12 a quart! I buy Mobil 1 anywhere for
about $4/quart. What is the equivalent Mobil 1 oil to Racing 4T? Is
there anything special about Racing 4T or your other motorcycle oils
that differentiates them from the commonly available Mobil 1? Is there
any reason Mobil 1 can't be used in my water-cooled motorcycle?

Triumph can also possibly void your factory warranty if you do not use
the weight of oil specified in your owner's manual. Automobile motor
oils are different in that they have friction modifiers that improve
fuel economy for automobiles however it can cause wet clutch problems.
[Ahh! finally a good answer!] The motorcycle motor oil also has higher
levels of anti-wear additives for your application and has higher
stability and more shear stable polymers for high revving application
such as motorcycles. You may want to talk to your dealer and ask them if
you could use Mobil's specific motorcycle motor oils in your bike
without voiding your warranty. Mobil's motorcycle motor oil's retail
price is 8.29qt. [the motorcycle variant is MX4T (similar name), 10W-40,
and is $7.99/qt at AutoZone]

$121! You can see why I'm interested in finding a less expensive
alternative. My owner's manual specs oil in 3 places and each one
differs. I also sense that the warranty could be voided by using the
wrong oil, at Triumph's whim. Fortunately, I only have to pay for 2 of
those oil changes. At that price, I won't be changing it early, as I
usually do.

Oh yea, it will definitely provide you with the protection, lubrication,
and performance that you are looking for. I definitely can understand
you trying to save money, pretty soon after going back to Triumph you
would have spent enough money to buy you another motorcycle. Thank you
for being a loyal Mobil1 user, and have great weekend!!
