part that causes the clunking, the dogs at the end of the gears that engage
as the gears are shifted, are not. This is the spot where the synchros live
in a synchromesh gearbox. They are serrated rings that act as brakes so the
gears mesh at the same speed. They also mesh with a lot of little dogs,
instead of the half dozen or less that motorcycles have. Lining the dogs up
so they will engage smoothly, is the trick. You may notice that your bike
won't go into gear when you're stopped. That's because the dogs are lined up
end to end, and you have to slip the clutch a little to mislaying them, so
they can engage in their respective slots.

Thanks for that Bare. I was never quite sure exactly how the gearbox worked.
So why can you shift a motorbike gearbox without the clutch but a car
gearbox doesn't work so well?
