I had an interesting near encounter with a ladder- wielding fellow this
past summer. Traveling on a fast multi lane secondary road, I came up on a
pickup truck, with a cap on the back, and a stack of five ladders of varying
length tied (?) to the roof. I was 100 yards behind him, also in the
middle lane. Signaled, pulled out to pass quickly, and as I approached his
left rear corner, the top most ladder, a 20 foot extension, swung, as if by
remote control, 90 degrees so that it was perpendicular to the truck,
sticking out about 6 feet from each side of the truck. I'm going 80, and
the end of the ladder is about 2 feet from my head. I backed off in panic
(my mistake, should have hammered by him), and fell well back. I watched
this idiot from a safe distance, if there was such a thing, as he drove 6
miles, as cars swerved away from him. I followed him off the highway to a
gas station, with smoke coming out of my ears. When I confronted said
moron, his response, as he casually pushed the ladder back without re- tying
it, was "it ain't going nowhere".....a strong argument for a bike- mounted
RPG if there ever was one.....
