go to a bike shop and look at how the back protectors are contained in
several brands of jackets. my Teknic has a mesh bag, shaped like the
protector [big heart shape], with a Velcro closure. the armor is a multi
layer solid sheet of tough foam, about 3/8" thick. it works, i've tested
it the hard way. you didn't mention shoulder and elbow pads.
if the seamstress is a 1/2" off in putting it in - it's at least 6 inches
wide, small errors won't likely compromise its function.
the right thing to do is get a good armored jacket built for the task, and
reserve your present jacket for formal occasions.
while you're at it, get some Bohn armored pants or similar -
