Marc, You should never trust the road. Public road surfaces change so much, that you never should trust a road surface you can't see well. On a race track you have a pretty good idea that a construction truck hasn't dumped a bunch of dry cement mix on the road or strewn nails and screws. On a Public road you have so many different types of road hazards that can appear without warning. Just recently I nearly lost it just after I came out of a turnaround. I got on the throttle hard when suddenly the rearend started sliding left and right and the front end started tankslapping. Somehow by the grace of an all powerful being I managed to keep the bike upright. What caused this? oil from a garbage truck whose engine had blown up. Your friend out paces you at night because he's a bigger gambler than you are, don't feel bad about it.
