[ST] Plasti-Shield (was Front mudguard extension)

Greets All,

Last night I worked on the Plasti-Shield (I'm game if anyone has a better
name). I took some small pieces of 3/4 inch plywood, a 4x4, and some small
wood chips to make the mold for the shield. It was a lot easier than I had
expected, thought it took 2 or 3 hours. I have pics of the work in
progress and finished product for anyone who cares to see.

Sorry, I still don't have an ftp or web site for you to download them from.
If anyone wants to offer, I'll send the pics and include a short
description of what is going on in each pic. Following is a description of
each shot.

Pic #119: This pic shows the Plasti-Shield after 7 minutes in the 250
degree oven. I expected to have to fold the plexiglas, but it just drooped
the right way. As you can see, the wedges on the side are to force the
shield to curve up at the edges, while the center wedge holds it down.
You'll also note the edges curled up a little more than I needed. I made
another hold-down to keep it from curling up any further in the next oven
treatment.

Pic #120: Same as #119, but from the side. The white sheet underneath is
what I used to make tracings so I would know where to cut, bend, etc. I
used a small paint bucket to get the outside curve.

Pic #121: Same as #119 but from above, this time with a 12-inch ruler.

Pic #122: This is an oven shot. The plexiglas turns sort of smokey white
when it warms. I used the coffee cup to keep the bottom edge from curling
up. It should bend towards the rear of the bike to follow the fairing. I
have already cut the tip off the triangular piece of plywood so the bottom
edge will be able to droop down. I needed to do this because, when
mounted, the bottom edge was closer to the tire than my comfort factor
allowed (it was about an inch away). Well, it wouldn't droop because the
swept-back sides supported it. After letting it warm up I got a couple of
pot holders to force the bottom edge back. This now contorted the whole
business a bit, but it worked.

Pic #124: Here's what it looks like mounted. I took the fuzzy side of some
white velcro to use as a cushion. Wish it were red, but I don't care.
I'll use this until someone thinks of a better idea. There is more of a
gap now between the two lower fairing pieces because the screw doesn't seat
all the way into the fairings. I used a 5/16 inch drill. 9/32 is probably
the correct size.

Pic #125: Shows some of the "tools" and mess I made.

Pic #126: Pic showing mounted Plasti-Shield from the left hand side of the
bike. I love it!

Pic #127: 3/4 shot from the front. Except for the small white tab I think
it looks great.

The dealer has my rear mudder on order, and I'll be getting a front
mudguard extension. I expect I will create a similar plasti-shield to
cover that part of the suspension and pipe that the rear mudder doesn't.
We'll see though. I don't want to junk it up, but I also don't want to
have crevices where road crud can just continue to accumulate.
