I did new pads recently, and that, of course, works wonders.  I addition, I
found that the small rod that the pads pass through was all gummed up with
road crap and brake dust.  Cleaning this thoroughly with brake cleaner
helped to allow the pads to fully retract, and move freely, helping to
restore "monster brakes"
