Several folks have stated that
> 89 pump octane is 95 research octane.
That is not correct but can be.  It depends.  The fact is the service manual
states, and some but not all users manuals state that 89 PON is OK.  That
does not make 95 RON equal 89 PON.  It just means you can use either figure.
When you computer R+M / 2 to get PON, you really don't know what the R or
the M is because most pumps just give you the PON.  You could have 94 RON
and 84 MON and be 89 PON.  There are several other combinations as well.
What the dual standards of 95 RON and 89 PON really indicate is that there
is not an ABSOLUTE, hard line in the octane requirement for the ST or any
other bike.
