MCN recently published a nice comparo on lubes, I'm about to dig that back
out to see what I'm going to try next...

I've always cleaned the chain by spraying WD-40 on a rag then rubbing the
chain, as I don't won't the WD-40 getting to to grease behind the o-rings
and cleaning it out.  As penetrating as WD-40 is that's a real possibility
if you spray it onto the chain directly. 

After cleaning I've been lubing with Honda Chain Lube.  Seems to do the
job, doesn't sling much off, etc. but does look dirty quickly so I'm
looking for something better at staying clean looking while still
protecting the chain.  

After fjording some high water last week, I found some minor surface rusty
spots that leave behing a slightly stained or pitted look.  Gotta stop
that from happening by using something that doesn't wash off so easy I
guess.

Also in cleaning the rear sprocket the WD-40 breaks up the gunk real nice
and easy, but the black of it seems to "stain" the sprocket but getting
into the surface irregularities, how to get rid of that?
