[ST] Hands on fire!!!! help!!!

Ok Gang, here's a real brain teaser (please keep in mind that I am rather
electrically challenged but do have an ohm meter/circuit tester if someone
will walk me through it). Have had heated handgrips for the past three
years. Recently I did some work and had to remove the grips. I noticed
that the black and brown wires in the throttle grip were missing some
insulation right where they exit the small hole in the cylinder to travel
down the underside of the clip-on bars. I tried to put a small amount of
insulation (read: hot glue because its so hard to get to the wires---the
glue seemed to cover the wires and did not melt anymore insulation--- but I
have no clue how well it insulated the exposed areas) . What is really
strange is that the grips stay on 'high' regardless of the switch position.
What is even stranger is that I disconnected all three wires from the
heater switch, and they are still hot!!!!! I imagine I'm going to have to
take off the front fairing assembly, but really don't know where to begin.
I understand that the grips are routed through the auxiliary fuse and are
tied into the ignition (so at least the grips are not 'on' when the bike is
off). Can the black and brown wires in the right grip be touching and
completing a circuit???? I'm really at a loss and can't imagine spending
the summer driving around with my hands on fire.

Any help would be much appreciated. Lance La Certe, Denver, CO '99
