At 42000 my valves were just fine. We didn't disassemble the head, but I
did have two mechanics from different shops look at them and there was no
sign of damage. I have also adjusted the valves at the specified intervals
and adjusted as necessary. The valves have never gone out of spec, but I
always adjust them as they approach the limit. I have an early '99 ST, so
any production changes would likely have happened after my bike was
manufactured. This doesn't, of course eliminate the possibility of a bad
batch of valves.

i don't dispute the condition of the valves and seats, but the cause is
not so certain. my uninformed guess is that a design flaw would have
surfaced in several STs, RSs, etc., before now [Dan W - how did your
valves look?];
