I don't think the weight difference is that huge. But, remember

a) Ducati spends a lot on their suspension, they have resources 
to get it right and buy the best shocks.

b) At least the 999 has a DSSA, and I thought their V4 GP bike 
had a DSSA as well, but I am probably wrong.

But, I ain't no Bayliss, so in the grand scheme of things, I 
would be willing to ride a bike that is 5% less capable, when in 
reality I can't use more than 70% of what it has to offer in the 
first place.
