RE: [ST] Rear Sprockets



Matt,

The "7075-T6" designation is the type of aluminum allot used, (as opposed to
6061-T6 or 2024-T4, for instance.) Most hard anodized sprockets and other
parts are made from 7075 as it's the strongest and most easily hardened of
all the various alloys. It's not a true "hardening" in the same way alloy
steels are done, but more of a tempering. The hard anodizing is a
post-machining process that creates a hard coat of perhaps .003" depth, but
is quite tough. Not all 7075-t6 sprockets have that secondary anodizing
process done, better find out for sure before buying.

Me? I just replaced my OEM steel rear with an OEM steel replacement. The
first still looked good at 41,000 miles, and I'm not racing so I don't feel
any desire to save weight at the expense of long life. Even a hard anodized
AL sprocket can't touch the life of a steel one.

I'm looking into replacing the rear sprocket on my '01 Sprint ST with a 45
tooth.  There seems to be two places to get them.  Anyone have any input as
to the difference between these two (or are they exactly the same)?  Is hard
anodized alloy actually 7075-T6 Aluminum?  Any input would be appreciated.
