Steve,
I had a similar issue with my 2002ST. I could ride in the
rain all day. As soon as it sat in the rain (or outside when
below the dew point) I'd have a similar experience. I will
add that I would hear a faint popping sound from under
the bodywork on the left side of the bike (if you're sitting
on it).
While I had the seat and subframe plastic off replacing
the famed fuel elbow I went to start the bike and the same
problem happened (bike was in the garage, but it was late
and below the dew point). When it happened there was a
small puff of smoke from the negative battery terminal.
I removed both terminals to notice thatthey were pitted
and dirty. I lightly took a fine emory cloth to the ends
of the cables and batter terminals and attached the cables
back firmly.
The problem has not occured since. I was even up in NH
at NHIS this weekend and the bike was rained on while I
slept. The problem did not occur.
Hope this is helpful.
