RE: [ST] Better Helmet

There are a lot of great helmets out there. Suomy, KBC are two others that
are in that price range. Arai went to a dealer only system. I don't think
you can order them online at this time and their prices are generally above
$400.00. Shoei makes a quality helmet and they have many satisfied
customers. Buying a helmet with a SNELL and/or DOT sticker on it will get
you the crash quality you are looking for, the rest of your money is spent
on features such as padding, visor quality and venting systems.

If at all possible, you should not buy a helmet you haven't had on your head
for at least 15 minutes. Trying them on helps you get a feel for the size
of helmet you will need, if it will stay on your head in a get-off, and if
it has any pinch spots. Even better if your dealer will let you take one
for a ride on your bike to test the noise factor. I've never purchased
anything but Arai Signets. For me, they are very comfortable, all day
helmets. For others, they are torture devices. If the helmet is not
comfortable, you may be tempted to not wear it.

I wear a Bell M-4. I'm not as satisfied with the quality as I was with
my older Bells (Stars and an M2) and am looking for a great helmet, up
to $400, to replace it. I have 18 hours of OT burning a hole in my
pocket, too! I've been looking at Shoei RF-900/RF-1000, Simpson Super
Bandit (always wanted a Bandit) and a Bell M-5. The Bell M2 is still
available as an auto helmet, but only in white and black, so it's out.
Arai is unavailable locally, maybe unavailable in Tennessee. I only see
$125 and under helmets in the local dealers so I expect to mail-order
this one. I have never been afraid to mail-order a Bell, but the others
I don't know. What else would you recommend?
