RE: [ST] starter bike wanted in VA

Since I haven't seen a reply, I'll throw my .02 in.

It depends on if your son has any riding experience. I strongly believe, someone with little or no riding experience should start with something like a Honda Rebel (cruiser style) or Honda Nighthawk (naked street) or equivalent. Both of which are like 234cc. If he's wild and reckless, definitely nothing bigger than a 250. If he's smart and doesn't let peer pressure dictate his actions up to a 600 should be fine.

I started with a Yamaha Radian (599cc) naked street back in 1987. I probably should have started with something smaller, but it worked out ok. I started with a healthy throttle respect, and was very careful as I learned to become one with it. I did have some dirt bike riding experience so that helped.

I definitely would not go with anything greater than 600cc for a first, and NOT something like CBR600RR either no matter how good the newbie thinks he/she is. Something along the line of an SV650 is more than enough.

It really upsets me when I see a kid, and I mean kid, getting a CBR600RR or GSX-R1000 type bike as the first with no clue. IMO that's a deadly combination for the kid and the others on the road.

Example: When my RS was in for the break-in service, a kid was getting a GSX-R750. It was his first. His mother was there, too, and let the kid get it? He didn't even want to ride it home, they trailered it? You can see the fear/nervousness in his face. He couldn't have been more than 18. WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY THINKING?????

That was three years ago. I hope he's still alive.

My .02

Good Luck.

Rich

Subject: [ST] starter bike wanted in VA

My oldest son, who goes to UVA, is thinking about getting a small bike or
scooter for transportation this spring and summer.

Anyone back that way have any leads on a decent starter bike?
