* Remove the chain guard

* Stretch the chain taught by hanging a 10-20kg (20-40lb) weight on the
chain

* Measure the length of 20 links on the straight part of the chain from pin
centre of the 1st pin to the centre of the 21st pin. Since the chain may
wear unevenly take measurements at several places

* If the length exceeds the maximum service limit of 321 mm, the chain must
be replaced.

This would apply to all these type of chains (530 I think).

Another good rule of thumb as has been said earlier is to see how far you
can pull the chain off the sprocket.

And my opinion is if you change the chain, change the sprockets. Worn
sprockets will shorten the life of your new chain.
