[ST] Re: Longevity

My '99 ST made it to 18,000 miles with only a fuel sender failure and a
crank position sensor slipped out of adjustment. At 18,000, which was last
weekend, I was cruising along at 70ish, running fine, engine temp normal and
no warning lights, when it made an awful crunching noise and locked up. The
damage is so extensive that it's hard to say what happened first, but my
theory is that the timing chain jumped off of the cams, although it wasn't
broken and the adjuster was still in place. The head has a large hole
punched in it, all the valves except 1 are gone, laying about in the
crankcase along with the remnants of two pistons shattered into small
pieces. Two bent rods. Lord only knows about the crank and the rod that
still has the better part of a piston on it. The chain was off the intake
cam, but still on the exhaust cam.
In any case, I'm looking for a Daytona engine if anyone should have one
laying about. In the meantime, I still have my '74 Norton Commando to ride.
