RE: [ST] Mobil 1 15W-50 SuperSyn Oil

I went through this debate (with myself) when trying to determine if this
oil could be used. A couple of things. First, I used it in my Sprint, and
I currently have it in my Speedmaster (which by the way, Triumph also lists
in the manual with the same oil specification). Neither have had any
problems, more specifically no clutch slippage. It was my understanding
from my research that the JASO MB specification, which the 15w-50 Mobil1 red
cap carries might cause clutch slippage. The Triumph Mobil1 is JASO MA. So
that appears to be the difference between the two oils. But again, I've
used the "red cap" Mobil1, and am currently using it, and have no clutch
slippage problems. Just to add, you are correct in that neither oil is
"energy-conserving". Also to note, in the Triumph Shop manual, it states
that the oil should be 15w-50 with an API rating of SG or SH (sorry cannot
remember which at the moment) OR HIGHER. So they say that SJ or SL would be
fine. Anyway, I figured it was worth a $20 experiment to see if I could
save money in the long run. My intention was that if the clutch started
slipping, I'd drain the oil and go buy the Triumph stuff. No clutch
slippage has occurred. There's my experience - yours may vary.

Subject: [ST] Mobil 1 15W-50 SuperSyn Oil

At the outset I'd like to state that I'd prefer that this does not evolve
into another full-blown oil thread. Specifically I'd rather not receive
everyone's opinion as to which is the best oil to use. I do, however, wish
to poll the listers for some specific oil information.

My goal is to determine, if possible, whether the Mobil 1 15W-50 SuperSyn
full-synthetic oil ('red cap') that is available from WalMart, will cause
any clutch problems on our bikes or not.

I already know that this oil is NOT labelled as 'EC' or 'energy-conserving',
which normally is a good thing, and means that it doesn't contain friction
modifiers that can cause wet clutch slippage. However, in addition to the
API SH rating (which is also a good thing), this oil is also rated API SJ.
