Sounds like a slack chain to me. With 30K on it it may be time for a new chain/sprocket kit....
I have a 99. No dipstick but the (very convenient) window.

Not the easiest thing to read!!

And - I have noticed a slight metalic rattle when backing off hard in
lower gears, sounds like its coming for motor but haven't really looked
hard - bike has dome 30,000 klm ( 18,000 miles ) and has regular oil
change and service ??
