I hear this statement a lot. But I don't think it holds much water.
I have mixed brands front and rear, new with half used and most any 
combination you can think of, with no ill effects.
For the very best handling and road feel, you can't beat new tires on both 
ends with the same brand. But a mixed set is not bad, just not as good.
