Some places spread gravel (aka cinders) on the roads in winter to aid
traction rather than use salt. Not sure of the origin of the name, but I
think it's just gravel. Might be coke oven or steel mill related though.

when i was a yout' in Pittsburgh, we called them clinkers, or Red Dog -
ostensibly the slag off the top of a run of steel in a blast furnace, or
out the top of a Bessemer converter. an endless supply...back then.
