I don't think what I was seeing was gravel, looked like tiny little black
puff balls for lack of a better description.  Last year about this time I
was down in SE Ohio and came in a little hot into a switchback that was
littered with it still in between the tire tracks. It wasn't quite a
powdery thing, real gritty.  Mebbe a volcano blew it's top nearby? ;^{D
