RE: [ST] GPS?

Greetings;

I have been using a Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS on a RAM mounting,
which has proved to be very useful and also very durable. I rode over
5000km over 6 days, over some rather rough roads, and the GPS unit and
mount were not affected at all.

The mapping that I used was the Magellan Discover AUS CD, which
basically plots all the surfaced and unsurfaced roads in Australia. It
is pretty accurate and complete. The only drawback is that it does not
have address point data on the map, so you can navigate to a place and a
road, but not to a specific address point on the road. This was
purchased separately, as only the main roads were included on the base
map pre loaded onto the Meridian GPS.

On the odd times that I need to use the cage, I use the Destinator
software package, loaded onto my compaq IPAQ 3950, coupled with a Haikom
Bluetooth GPS unit. This has a full colour display, along with steering
and voice instructions to individual address points. I keep all the
mapping data for Australia on an 256 meg SD card, which fits into the
IPAQ expansion slot on the PDA. This is a brilliant piece of GPS
software.

I use the Magellan on the bike, rather than the IPAQ for two main
reasons - the Magellan is waterproof and a lot tougher than the PDA, and
secondly, it provides a readout of current speed in BIG digits - unlike
the small digits on the IPAQ.

YMMV

Subject: [ST] GPS?

One of the guys from work brought in his new Delorme Earthmate GPS unit
connected to his laptop through USB 2. port. Man that thing is very
cool. Perked my interest, so what is everyone using on Sport touring
motorcycles? What is the hot setup for GPS and what kind of mount are
you using and where and how do you attach mount . Do they come with
city maps loaded in them or is that an added extra?
