[ST] floppy mirrors

Recalling something from the list about running a bolt through the joint in
the mirror arm, I decided to try this today. Clawing through the biscuit tin
that contains my collection, I found two fine-threaded bolts, 3/16" diameter and
1 1/2" long. They dropped through the hole at the joint nicely, but
tightening them up does nothing. On closer inspection, I saw that I was just squeezing,
top and bottom, the casting of the proximal part of the arm that attaches to
the fairing. To do any good, I would need a spacer with a hole big enough to
surround the protruding part of the casting, and small enough to fit inside
the rim of the depression wherein the cheap sheet metal star washer resides.
Returning to the biscuit tin, I came up with a sturdy lock washer (the broken
circle kind-not the star kind) that is 7/8" OD and 1/2" ID that fits perfectly.
With another smaller lock washer (9/16" OD) on top of this to prevent the
bolt head from dropping through, I inserted the whole assembly into place (the
washers and bolt head uppermost, and nut underneath, of course), and to my
delight, the wobble disappeared after moderate tightening. The swingaway action of
the mirror arm was a little firmer than I would have liked, but a little WD-40
helped that. Wheher re-torqueing will be needed as time goes by remains to be
seen; if so, some Loctite may serve. A properly machined spacer would be more
elegant, but the above is working so far-(0) miles of use).
If any one cares, I got 50 miles per US gallon on my last tankful-'99 Sprint
ST, stock muffler and tune-at 23,000 miles-just before its 24,000 mile oil
change and valve adjustment. This was a out-of-town trip, part slow 2-lane roads
and part freeway. However, 45-50 mpg is what I have always obtained, including
city driving. Perhaps my-ah-mature driving style has something to do with it.
