I did start by doing that, but found it truly is much easier to position the
cams the way I was shown by a guy with lots of experience. Whatever works
for you! :)

Even easier method and requires no cover removal: Pull the plugs, put it in
gear and use the rear wheel to turn the shaft. I only had the valves done at
12k. So it was either 8,000 or 20,000 miles before it finally leaked
