Why is the smaller tire better? I just upgraded from an '81 Suzuki with
100 rear wheel, it tugged on every seam in the road and wiggled on the
rain grooves. I wanted larger tires...

Exactly!... I found the 170 an improvement on my RS and the 160
better still. =8o)
