The key here is the word WIPE  -----  or in your case 'wide'   ;-)

Wiping the chain clean using WD40 (which is primarily kerosone BTW) is fine to remove
surface contamination.  Just don't soak it in the stuff or you risk washing away the
'lifetime' lubricant under the X-ring (or O-ring) seals.
