Re: [ST] Re: CHAIN / SPROCKET WEAR.

Listen to Dan the Man.

I concur with Dan (he's a pretty reliable guy actually). 20K is good mileage for your riding style. Definitely change to whole shebang, it's expensive but worth it, in the long run. The OEM chain is a good unit now that they have switched from Regina to DID. You could upgrade to the DID X-Ring. I believe the stocker is the O-ring. I've used both and did not notice a significant difference in overall mileage, however.

Howdy,

Glad Mary Ann's healed, hope the pain goes away soon.

As to the chain/sprockets, you have already measured for tight spots. The other test is to try to pull the chain straight off the rear sprocket with your fingers. If it is worn you are going to be able to pull it away from the sprocket rather easily. A new chain will not pull away from the sprocket.

After 20,000 miles, your sprockets are worn and should be replaced with the chain as they will wear your new chain prematurely. I have always changed sprockets and chains at the same time. When you take your old sprocket off, match it up to the new spocket. I think you will be surprised at how worn the old sprockets are. 20,000 miles is good mileage out of a chain and sprockets.

G'day folks.. more chain wear questions
My 2002 ST has done 32,000 klm (19,500 miles) and I think the original
chain is getting a bit suspect. It has become very noisy when backing
off or changing down thru the gears to slow down - It has developed one
tight spot. I have 18/43 set up which suits me fine and the front and
back sprokets are showing no wear marks at all. I ride hard, mostly
with my girlfriend as pillion and mostly twisty country roads = lots of
gear changes. How do you check if the chain is thru, or do I just keep adjusting it
till the sprockets wear out ? Should I get a new OEM chain and fit it
up to the old sprockets - or should I just replace the whole lot, which
will be expensive (even in Australia) Any previous experience with this
would be greatly appreciated. Thx - Harry 2002 ST (T/Red IMHO = the best color)
PS: For those who recall - the 2nd rear axle bearing seems fine - and
Mary Ann's leg/knee has healed well, but can still be painful
sometimes..
