There are two common sources of oil consumption (as opposed to other
forms of loss):
a) Valve stem seals - with the airbox off, hold the throttle
butterflies open and look for a shiny carbon buildup on the heads of
the intake valves. An engine with bad valve stem seals will sometimes
emit a puff of bluish oil smoke when the throttle is opened after a
long deceleration.
and
b) Piston rings. There have been many cases of piston rings not
having properly seated during the running-in period. Engines with bad
oil control rings will often smoke during hard acceleration.

My '01 uses a similar amount and the airbox is dry. I'm not concerned
about this level of consumption.
