[ST] accidents

I had a near miss two/three years ago that resulted in me selling my bike and not riding until May this year.

I was waiting at an intersection to turn across the oncoming traffic. The lights changed and the oncoming traffic stopped for the red, I waited for the intersection to clear (three lanes in each direction) and pulled off just as the traffic from the side started to enter the intersection, so I had to get through fairly quickly to avoid obstructing the traffic.

I suddenly had a weird feeling, and stopped.

At that moment an idiot, barreling along at at least twice the speed limit in the oncoming lane, realized he was going too fast to stop for the red, shot into the far left lane where there was no one standing and jumped the red light.

He missed me by inches, if I had not stopped he would have hit me square on from the side, and at least 100 km/h - not too much chance of survival.

I still don't know what made me stop, but I came so close to getting splattered that I gave up riding for a while.

I'm still neurotic about intersections and heavy traffic, and I don't ride my bike to work and back every day anymore, so that I don't get too casual about the traffic.

cheers
