But wouldn't that then leave a pint of el cheapo winter oil in the
engine
if you don't change the filter in Spring ?

Definitely change the filter now. From what I've read, used oil
contains
acids produced under normal operating conditions. No sense in draining
the "acidic" oil from the pan and leave a "pint" of acid in the filter
to
be mixed in with the fresh cheapo oil.

I've cheated in the Spring and not switched the winter filter before. I
figure with 2 miles and 10 running minutes on it, I can get away with
it.
I could be wrong...

Cheers Jeremy...

So el cheapo 10W40 just for over the winter - got it. What about the
oil
filter and the good stuff to put into it in Spring ? Since I wont be
running it much - i.e. just to warm it up to change it, do I need to
change the filter BEFORE winter or can it wait till spring ?

Cheers,

Kevin

1. Good plan.
2. Clean it first.
3. Good plan.
4. Good idea, the more fuel, the less potentially moist air available
for
condensation. Non-metal tanks on the ST aren't a rust risk, but water
in
the gas isn't helpful come Spring. 5. Again, good plan. 6. Never tried
that one. 7. Hah! 8. Good plan.

I've been instructed to use whatever motor oil I can find in bulk for
cheap for the winter time. Since it's likely you won't be running it
more
than a few minutes before draining it again in the Spring, it shouldn't
matter what quality it is. The only thing I can think of that might be
unpleasant is the newest automotive oil (I forget the rating) which has
proven to be too slippery for wet clutches. However, I have dumped
10W40
WalMart special oil in the bikes for 4 years and not noticed any poor
behavior once the proper oil was changed in the Spring.

YMMV.

Time to put the ST away for the winter - I will keep the S3 out for the
odd day when it warms up enough to ride.

So I want to change my oil (and I assume filter ?) before I put it away.

Actually, here's what I intend to do to winterize the bike (comments
much
appreciated):

1.	Clean and wax the bike
2.	Overly oil/wax the chain
3.	Put in some stabil fuel stuff - run it to get it through the
system
4.	Top the tank off (is this necessary, or can I leave it as is ?)
5.	Change the oil and filter
6.	Spray WD40 on exposed metal
7.	Put it in my porch ('er indoors is none too pleased...), on the
center stand - I might try to get the front-end of the floor but failing
this I will put a bit of carpet under the front wheel and rotate it
every
month.
8.	Take the battery out and put it on a battery tender

Did I miss anything - do I need to overflate/underflate the tyres ? I
don't need to be bothered about rodents so I wasn't planning on covering
the exhaust etc.

So the question is, which oil should I use - bearing in mind I plan on
changing it in spring before I ride it in anger. I have heard of people
talking Mobil gold top, red top oil and some other non-Triumph oil
filters
and I am totally confused - can someone send links (me likey pictures to
look at) so I can be sure I get the right stuff (people have talked
about
getting it at Wally world - is this the best place to get said oil ?).

Cheers,

Kevin
