Check out www.advrider.com for answers to all of your questions, although
many may be biased and blinded by "badge fixation". There are also tigerpilots
there though to even things out. Be aware that the forum can be very addictive.

You might find a couple of ancient posts of me under the alias "Flying Dutchman".
I had a R1150GS for 2.5 years. Great to ride, but it should have a Varadero
engine. Overrated in terms of reliability, definitely overpriced. I had a lot
of problems with it, most you will find on the forum as well. Most beemer people
think it's normal for a bike ("character"), assuming it's probably worse with other
brands.

If you want to see how the R1150GSA really copes in bad terrain check out
the "Long Way Round" DVD with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman:
http://www.longwayround.com/lwr.php
I recommend (to everybody on this list in fact) buying the special edition
DVD from this trip from London to New York, the long way round. You can
buy it cheapest at amazon: http://tinyurl.com/csypb
This DVD is also addictive and will cost you at least one night of sleep,
because you won't be able to stop viewing it. And you will want to see it
again and again... it's really very cool.
