Yikes!  I'm glad to hear you're ok, Lisa. 

I had kind of a similar experience last year (fortunately in my car as
well).  I was merging on to Interstate 85 south, and noticed a truck ahead
of me, a couple of lanes over, which was carrying a LOT of wooden palates,
none of which were tied down.  Of course, the truck didn't have a license
plate (it was new).

Sure enough, as soon as I started moving over to the left, one of the
palates went airborne.  I checked my mirrors and swerved right; so did the
palate.  I swerved back to the left, and it followed (must have been a
distant relative of the smiley bag).  I hit the brakes hard as it hit the
ground and rebounded up to eye-level.  Fortunately, I slowed down enough
that it had fallen down to the level of my front bumper when it hit me.

It only did cosmetic damage, but scared the crap out of me.  My erratic
driving and the ensuing shower of wooden debris probably scared the crap out
of the people behind me.

The worst part is - after calling the police and filing a report, I was told
that they can't do anything about it unless there is an injury or they
witness it happening.  So, apparently you can lob anvils off the back of a
flat bed truck, so long as nobody's hurt and there are no cops around.
Sounds like great fun for the whole family.
