With the lack of an archive I have no idea what has been discussed
before, but recently in German magazines a new gadget has been
appearing in tests: www.bikeman.se .
It's something I think I would like to buy, although I'd like
to share shipping costs with someone (in Holland then...).
Just one cable hooked up to my GSM (cellphone) to standard
earplugs (shipped in 2 sizes). A throatmike converts the
vibrations from your voice into normal voice without picking
up the noise of the air or engine. Since my Nokia 6230 also has
voicedialing, a memory card, an MP3 player and FM radio the
Bikeman GSM neckmike will allow me to listen to music and call,
while not blowing up my ears or having the need for amplifiers,
batteries etc. With an extra adapter you can hook this set up
to a standard MP3/CD/Radio player or a portophone (Alan radio)
for wireless rider-rider comm (with PTT).

It's relatively cheap, integrates hearing protection with comm
and music :-). No extra batteries and because of the neckmike
and you can easily use it above 180 km/h (according to Motorrad
magazine which I have here, who labeled it "Gut"). The person
on the other side of the phone will not notice you are calling
from a motorcycle untill 140 km/h, after which some disturbance
might give it away a bit, according to Motorrad. They liked it,
but didn't label it as "sehr Gut" because it could be a bit of
a pain to put your helmet over the thicker-than-usual earplugs.
But once fitted and sealing correctly they seem to work very good.

Of course you need to know if one of those 2 sized of standard
plugs will fit your ears comfortably. That's why I emailed them
to ask about return policy. But to me this sounds like a great
and simple solution, if the plugs fit. I have a standard set
of plugs which look like that (without the integrated speakers)
which I really like, so I'm hopefull. Might have to cut away some
extra foam in the helmet to prevent pressure though.

There is a phone number on the site you can call to listen to
the sound quality of the throatmike while riding motorcycle.
Anybody happen to have experience with this product?

Emile
