Having had the Kawi, and also getting a chance to ride a Tiger (on the way back from the Dragon this year - switched off with one of the other riders on our 14-hour trek back...), I would have to strongly say that the Tiger is a better road bike. And, the Kawi is a much better off-road bike (I did jump with the KLX). I haven't ridden a Tiger off-road, but after riding it, I get the feel that it is really good on dirt roads, fire trails and the occasional true trail maybe. But it handles great on road - decent in the twisties, good on the highway. The kawi was bad on the highway for comfort and gearing - felt like you were winding it out getting it up to highway speeds, seat was a brick. It was light and sort of flickable on the road, but nothing great.

Here's how I see it:

Kawi - a dirt bike turned into a road-going bike.
Tiger - street bike (with dirt bike position and geometry and the sort) made to be able to go off-road.

Matt (H), I'm not so sure I agree. I wouldn't want to jump with either my
KLR650, or 01ST. And, I'm not sure I'd agree that BMW and Triumph are much
better on the road. If you define +ACI-road+ACI- as super slab, or intend high
speed carving, then, of course, the ST would be my choice. However, if
we're talking marginal roads (like going to Alaska or anything with dirt),
I'd much rather be on the KLR.

I missed the original message setting forth the discussion, so I probably
shouldn't be voicing an opinion here. But, if you're trying to select a
bike for rugged traveling, you might want to peruse the following site:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/. While you'll see that BMW's, KLR's, and
Tigers are popular, it seems the hardcore adventure travelers like light
bikes (400 cc's). They also like bikes that can be repaired anywhere.

I set-up a KLR for a trip to Alaska (haven't yet made it), thinking it was
an ideal dual sport. But, it has come to be my favorite bike. I have no
problems doing 400 mile days and could probably do much more if necessary.
To be fair, I've done an 1100 mile day on the ST. Of course, the real
answer is that you need more than one bike (why won't my wife believe me).

Matt (K) - If you have any trip reports of your solo to Alaska, I'd love to
read them.

This debate is a lot like the Sport-Tourer one. Some people think a
Honda St1300 is a sport-tourer, others think a Kawasaki ZZR-1200 is. I
liken this the same - had a KLX650 for a while. While the Kawi
offerings are much better off-road, the BMW and Triumph offerings are
much better on the road. I wouldn't want to be doing hours each day on
the Kawi, but I wouldn't want to be jumping with the BMW or Triumph

Just depends on what you want to do, and what you are willing to
compromise.

My choice would have been a KLR650. Went solo to Alaska on one without
a problem. Regrettably sold it at the end of the trip, but bought
another one when I moved to Ferndale. No problems with that one either,
other than a few lost bolts due to vibration. The KLR has been the most
durable bike I've ever owned. It's also at least a hundred pounds
lighter than the BMW and Triumph offerings, and if you've ever ridden
off road, you know that is pretty important.
