read in the gutter motorcycling press that you need to be careful, as
"normal oil" will do more harm than good because it reacts with the outer
sleeve material. Or is that more journalistic nonsense? A silicon(e) or
teflon based lube (so called dry lubes) is best then?

Several buddies of mine use teflon lube on their mountain bike and road bike
cables, and swear by it. I bought some at REI (not too expensive), but
haven't had a chance to use it yet.
