I too have read all sorts of reports about oils reacting with cable liners
resulting in swollen liners and trapped cables.
However, I've never seen it happen and don't know of anyone who has actually
suffered from the problem.
It appears that while there is theoretically a possibility of adverse
reactions between certain types of cable construction and certain types of
oil, it rarely happens in practice. I'm sure there are people on this list
far better qualified to explain the reaction concerned and speculate on the
probability of it occurring in this particular application.
I use a light weight, simple mineral oil and it works fine.
I teach this method in my Motorcycle Maintenance course and I'd guess that
90% of the class give it a go and the vast majority are amazed by the
transformation to their bikes. The other 10% don't bother trying for various
reasons. No one has ever said their cable was worse after the operation. So,
that's probably roughly 400 people over the last 5 years with no adverse
affects.
