I believe that there is a need for change - that need being Eric wanted
the equipment/bandwidth/software/whatever for another purpose. So it
would be beneficial to him to have the list moved; and we should oblige
as he has so graciously hosted this site for some time now.

Subject: [ST] New List / Old List / No List...
I think collectively there is something peculiar and unhelpful about
the current discussion about what happens to this list. I suspect that
this current flurry of creativity will simply generate plenty of
opportunities for us all to repent at leisure.
Two observations.
First, despite all that is said about it, as far as I can tell this
current list has worked tolerably well for a good while, and although
it won't last for ever in its current configuration it is not in
imminent need of replacement - if we don't do anything today, tomorrow,
next week, the list will carry on working. Accordingly I am wary of
the suggestions that we do something 'in a rush' to move it to another
platform or to a different format.
Second, as others have noted, the value of this list actually is the
quality and attitude of the contributors, not the technology or domain
name that hook it all together.
Rushing off to create competing lists (even if they are only 'for
testing purposes' etc.) and the near aggressive promotion of these
alternatives herein I think misses the point. We all could set up our
own ST lists, and then we'd end up with a few hundred useless lists.
It would be much better I think to invest all this creative energy in
actually consulting with those who are active in the list about what
they would prefer, and then make a decision that reflects the
consensus. Would it be so hard, for example, to organise a simple
series of polls asking what people would prefer? (e.g. to yahoogroups
or not to yahoogroups?).
I think most people joined this list to discuss and share information
about their motorcycle. I hope we can soon get back to doing this.
Best regards
