A college friend of mine (who by then had developed an unhealthy and
unfathomable fascination with restoring 'black bomber' CB450's) rode a
'step-thru' Honda 50 over the Alps more than once - travelling from UK
to Rome (to see relations there). Not quite sports-touring (apparently
the auto-clutch couldn't cope with steep bits and he had to 'assist'
the bike's progress by pushing too...), but this was easy compared with
trying to keep the bike on road on way down (little drum brakes, narrow
hard tyres, lots of luggage... ). I don't remember what the top-speed
reached was, but scary all the same.
