[ST] Coolant Temp Sensor

Fellow STers, I am trolling for experience / information

I searched the archives last night and am also caught up on all current
digests.......

I have a peculiar / annoying behavior happening with my 45k '00 ST

If I try to hold a steady RPM say 3000 for instance, there is a feeling of
bubblyness, high strung, performance bike edginess if you will, a surge or
unsteadiness to the power delivery.

If I crack it open it goes away until I again try to hold a steady RPM. It
is most noticeable around town at lower RPMs but it is there all the time.
If I am on the highway I feel like there is the palm of a hand pushing back
on my chest every so often, like strong intermittent wind buffeting. Not
sure how else to describe it but power surging seems to sum it up.

I have had it to the dealer and they chased the usual suspects, returned it
to me saying that it was all set and low and behold, it is doing the same
thing it was when I dropped it off.

I cleaned the K&N airfilter, greased the intake boot connections and looked
for any loose connections
The dealer changed the plugs, loaded the current tune**, adjusted the CO
level adjusted and cleaned the chain and "test rode it". The dealer did
comment that the plugs were black and they felt it was way rich.

** latest tune seems to raise the in-gear idle to ~ 2k now though. I can
kick it in and out of gear and watch the revs jump form 1.1-1.5 up to 2k
going from neutral then back to 1.1-1.5 when going back to neutral

If the surge had been fixed with the different tune I could get used to the
idle issue that seems to have coincided with the new tune BUT the surge is
still there!

The performance does not seem to be strongly related to operating temp as it
becomes noticeable within 3 minutes from start. Say warm onward. But I do
think it is more noticeable when hot, both ambient and engine.

The archives seem to suggest that it is possibly a failing coolant temp
sensor. Other thoughts are to double check the CO and the Tune and look for
vacuum leaks. Without access to a tune boy I can't really play around with
too much.

Does anyone have:

A: Thoughts on what else I could check
B: Experience with the same symptoms and were able to cure them
C: The part number for the coolant temp sensor

Much appreciated.

The dealer I have favored is not open on Mondays, I can't get there during
weekdays without taking some time from work and I am on the verge of leaving
on a 2k mile round trip long weekend.........I hope
