[ST] ST Ignition Wires- user fixable?

Hi gang-

I recently purchased a new-to-me 2000 ST; riding last night I experienced ignition cutouts that were quickly diagnosed as ignition switch wire problems. Duct tape and zip ties got me home, but now I want to fix it for good, preferably without taking it to a dealer.

I've searched the archives, and while there are numerous mentions of the problems, there are few mentions of a user fix. Some questions:

1) Shop manual has no instructions on removal of ignition assembly. Is this something I can do myself? I'm a fairly handy guy but a little tool constrained right now.

2) Are there any user pages up on illustrating the problem and possible solutions? I found this in the archives:

http://www.rgalea.com/bikes/st/images/ignition.jpg

and the page that wraps it, but there was just a description of the problem- no info on a fix.

3) If the above are impractical, any suggestions of a dealer or shop in the LA area who might be able to get me fixed up quickly?

Thanks for any help. Today was supposed to be the first day of a multi-day tour, and it looks like I'll be stuck in the garage for at least part of it. Any help in getting me back out on the road would be much appreciated.
