RE: [ST] July Rider

not. I would expect to see numbers in the low 40's as I'm sure
Triumph was smart enough (shaky ground I know) to keep the effective
range around 200 miles.<<

I emailed some of this thread to a friend who showed up this weekend
on his fresh out-of-the-box '05 ST.

Here's his response:
"My mileage indicator says 41.7 MPG. As to the wind protection, it
hits me bout mid-chest, which to my way of thinking is nearly ideal!
First, you get smooth, clear air, with no helmet buffeting or wind
rattle; second at highway speeds (and beyond) you get a nice amount of
wind-assisted support, taking pressure off the arms and wrists. My
low fuel light seems to come on around 150 miles or thereabouts."

"I can tell you one interesting thing, though. When the fuel
indicator says it's empty, it means it!! I was coming up I-5 and the
indicator showed I had about 22 miles of range and the highway sign
said 19 miles to Salem, so I decided to go for it. A short time
later, I looked down and the indicator was blanked out, telling me it
couldn't guess any further. Well, I made it to the gas station and
put 5.47 gallons into the tank, which according to the manual holds
5.55 gallons. Guess that's about as close as I want to cut it!"

...so theoretically, the '05 will go 200 miles on a full tank which I
consider the minimum for a sport tourer. But also keep in mind that
the 41.7 number was achieved chasing some of the faster riders from
the Pacific NW. Let's just say that the '05 is well broken in ;o).
I've no doubt that I could add another few miles to each gallon
without much trouble.
