Dave,

I don't know a lot about RS's but those are the classic symptoms of a
short.  There is probably a wire somewhere on the bike that is either
broken or rubbed to the point that metal is touching the frame.  

Your only option is take off the body work, start the bike and start
wiggling the wiring harness from front to back.  When it cuts out look
closely at what you just wiggled.

This is not difficult, just annoying.
