RE: [ST] Steering

I have to object to "..only counter-steering can initiate a turn."
otherwise I agree that with so many people being able, in practice, to
get powered two-wheelers (PTWs in the UK) to go around corners it's not
a life-threatening topic.

In my days of pedal-cycling, I could get round most corners with no
hands on the bars but that is because of the bend in the forks. The
centre of mass of the fork/wheel/bars assembly is ahead of the axis of
rotation so leaning the bike applied a moment that steered it in the
direction of lean. Getting back straight probably took some body-lean,
out of the turn.

Matt, it's not a question of "most effect". You just can't steer a
bike
without counter-steering. The bike just goes it's own way.

Body position, leaning etc help to maintain lean angles and other
aspects, but only counter-steering can initiate a turn. Certainly you
can improve your cornering by body position, but you must understand
and
practice counter-steering to initiate a change of course. Where you
are on a bike can influence the lean angle (witness the Trials guys
and
slow-racers) but can't make it take a new direction.

Of course, at this point we are just picking nits.

If you use only one, yes counter steering has the most affect. Using
both will get you the most out of your turning.
