Absolutely the most important thing is to make sure that both sides
of the centerstand are touching the ground before you proceed.  If
the bike is leaned to one side or another, you'll get one of two
results.  The good result is that the bike just won't go up on the
centerstand.  I think you know about the other one.

Also, make sure the bars are straight.

And really, it's more about pushing down on the stand than it is
about lifting the bike.  You might need to build a little bit of
momentum as well.
